The newly paved asphalt road is dried by the striking hot sun, people can’t help but head to air-conditioned places to “prevent sunstrokes” due to the heat of the afternoon. This friends and family-run cake house, using white and pink as its main theme indoor, a soft combination like a maiden’s boudoir, just like walking into a dream world, isolated from the hustle and bustle outside.

This pink colored cake house has become a unique restaurant among this Malay community concentrated area. Magnifique Cakes has been in business for more than two years, by family friends Asrul and Nina together. It is hard to come across this sort of English style dessert or cake house, thus making Magnifique Cakes something new. It is reported that this restaurant offers English afternoon tea, attracting more people. Unfortunately, there happened to be a lack of ingredients on the day of the interview, the English afternoon tea was temporarily unavailable for the day, so we weren’t lucky enough to taste it. However, we were served with the store’s best selling desserts, mini pavlova, macaron and rainbow cake. Pure white dishes were filled with three different types of colorful desserts, the bright-colored cakes and fruits giving one’s heart a touch of joy.

The pavlova which main ingredient is comprised of meringue, is the national dessert of Australia and New Zealand. It’s simple ingredients and production process makes the pavlova one of the most favorite desserts among the two nations and the best summer dessert. The mini pavlova prepared by Magnifique Cakes has a tiny and exquisite appearance, the light orange pavlova is embellish by sour cream, blueberries and strawberries. This crispy pavlova comes with a light orange scent and a taste as amazing as the sweetness of a macaron! Meat balls with more meat and less flour.

All desserts in this store are hand-made by Nina initially until staff were recruited, Magnifique Cakes was also started because of Nina’s baking hobby. Asrul said: “My partner enjoys baking, even before the opening of this cake house, she would always bake cakes for relatives and friends, and used to sell them online. Eventually she wished to start a business, so naturally this cake house came into existence.” Asrul himself is a doctor, however he has left the medical profession for many years now when he went into business. Originally, this cake house was mainly focused on serving desserts, but western dishes were added due to the increasing demands from the customers. After a few months, Asrul hired Bob as their western food chef. Bob has 9 years of kitchen experience, specializing in western food. Bob joined Magnifique Cakes at an early period. Magnifique's custom made meatball and fries still remains as a popular dish today. Bob says: “Our meatballs have a high content of beef, which is more than 80%, our secret sauce is an improved version of brown sauce.” The meatball with more meat and less flour gives a richer elasticity, and the spice gives a stronger fragrant. This item is one of the most popular meals, suitable for lovers and friends to munch on while chit chatting. At the same time. Bob also recommends another best-selling dish, which is the Braised Chicken Mushroom Sauce. Roasted Chicken dipped in light brown Mushroom Sauce, the scent of the chicken which is marinated with spices and subsequently roasted, combined with the taste of mushroom sauce makes it even more delicious. Mashed potatoes and preserved zuchinni as its side dish, which comes in a satisfying portion!

After trying out the main meal and desserts, banana ice-cream was served as a treat! On a closer look, it seems different than the usual. Three scoops of vanilla ice-cream over a golden fried banana, with honey as its topping. This small change adds a creative finish to this banana ice-cream dessert, the frozen ice-cream combined with the crispy fried banana, sparks out a heavenly taste!
